He had a very special way of working with clothes. He used a method called "designing for distraction." This helped him work with different body shapes. He could make any actor look exactly right for their part. For example, he dressed Kay Francis in specific ways to match her roles. Sometimes he used frills for certain characters. Other times he used classic, tailored suits for others. He even made clothes for men playing women in movies.

His journey to fame began far away from Hollywood. He was born in Kiama, Australia, as Jack Kelly. His father, William Kelly, was a gentleman tailor. This may have helped Orry learn about clothes. At age 17, he went to Sydney to study banking. However, he became very interested in the theatre instead. He later moved to New York City to try acting. He lived in Greenwich Village with his friend Cary Grant.

Orry-Kelly worked on many films that people call classics. He designed for the movie Casablanca in 1942. He also worked on An American in Paris in 1951. He won awards for Les Girls and Some Like It Hot. He worked with many famous actresses like Bette Davis and Marilyn Monroe. He also designed for stars like Ingrid Bergman and Ava Gardner. His work helped define the look of many great movies.

Even after his movie career, his life stayed connected to art. He was a portrait artist and made private dresses for people. During World War II, he wrote a fashion column. It was called "Hollywood Fashion Parade." His life story was even shared in a documentary in 2015. His Academy Awards were later shown in a museum exhibition. This show was called "Orry-Kelly: Dressing Hollywood." It helped people remember his great skill.
