Georges Delerue was a famous French composer. A composer is a person who writes music. He wrote over 350 scores for movies and television. A score is the music that goes with a film. People often call him the "Mozart of cinema." This means his music was very special and beautiful. He spent 42 years making music for stories.

Music was part of his life from the very start. He grew up in a musical home in Roubaix, France. His mother played the piano at family gatherings. His grandfather led a group of singers called a chorale. Georges began playing the clarinet at age fourteen. He later studied the piano with a teacher named Madame Picavet-Bacquart. He learned from great composers like Bach and Mozart.

Learning to be a composer was a long journey. After a health struggle with scoliosis, he decided to write music. In 1945, he joined the Conservatoire de Paris. He studied composition with a teacher named Henri Büsser. To pay for his life, he played music at many events. He played at weddings, baptisms, and even funerals. He also played jazz in piano bars near the Paris Opera.

His career included many important awards and big projects. He won an Academy Award for the film A Little Romance in 1979. He also won three César Awards in a row. These were for the films Get Out Your Handkerchiefs, Love on the Run, and The Last Metro. He worked with many famous directors like François Truffaut. He even wrote music for Hollywood films like Platoon.

Sometimes, making music for movies was a hard job. For the Disney film Something Wicked This Way Comes, the studio did not use his music. They thought his score was too dark for families. They replaced it with lighter music by James Horner. Delerue said this was a very painful experience for him. He died in Los Angeles in 1992. He had just finished recording music for a film called Rich in Love.
