His talent earned him many of the highest honors in film. He won a Best Actor Award at the Cannes Film Festival. He also won a Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival.

Piccoli was a very flexible artist who worked in two different worlds. He began his career acting on a stage. Later, he moved to the "other shore," which was the world of cinema.

Some experts say he was special because he could do both well. He could act with the big presence needed for a stage. He could also be subtle and detailed for a movie camera. This ability allowed him to work with many famous directors. He was never trapped by just one single image or type of role.

His career was filled with famous names and important moments. He worked with the director Luis Buñuel in six different films. Two of these were Belle de Jour in 1967 and The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie in 1972.

He also acted in Contempt, which was directed by Jean-Luc Godard in 1963. He played the bad guy in the movie Topaz, directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1969. In 1973, he starred in a film called Life Size. This film was so controversial that it faced censorship in Spain. It was not released there until 1978.

Piccoli had a very busy and interesting personal life too. He was born in Paris to a family of musicians. His mother was a pianist and his father was a violinist.

He was married three times and had two divorces. He had one daughter from his first marriage to Éléonore Hirt. He was also married to the singer Juliette Gréco for eleven years. In his final marriage to Ludivine Clerc, he adopted a daughter and a son.

Beyond acting, Piccoli was a man with strong beliefs. In the 1950s, he was part of a famous circle in Paris. This group included thinkers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. He was a lifelong left-winger and a member of the French Communist Party. He cared about people and stood up against repression in the Soviet bloc.
