Luis Buñuel was a famous filmmaker who changed how people saw movies.

He was known for surrealism, which is a style of art that feels like a dream. His work often included political commentary to talk about society. Many people believe he was one of the greatest directors ever made. He worked in many different countries like France, Mexico, and Spain. His long career lasted from the 1920s all the way to the 1970s.

To make his famous surrealist films, Buñuel used a special way of thinking. He and his partner, Salvador Dalí, wanted to avoid logic. They did not want images to have a rational explanation. Their rule was to only use images that surprised them. This helped them create scenes that felt strange and unexpected. They wanted to open doors to the irrational parts of the mind. This method helped them lead the surrealist movement in art.

Buñuel was born in 1900 in Calanda, Spain.

He grew up in a wealthy family in Zaragoza. As a young boy, he loved to play with light and shadows. He used a magic lantern to project shapes onto bedsheets. He also learned to play the violin and practiced boxing. Later, he studied philosophy at the University of Madrid. There, he met important artists like the poet Federico García Lorca.

His career had many important milestones and big wins. In 1929, he made the short film Un Chien Andalou with Dalí. This film is still famous today for its startling images. Later, he moved to Mexico to work from 1947 to 1960. He made human stories like the film Los Olvidados in 1950. In 1961, his film Viridiana won a prize at the Cannes Film Festival. His movie The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie won an Academy Award in 1972.

Buñuel's life shows how movies can be much more than just stories. He used the camera to express big ideas about the world. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature twice. This shows how much people respected his creative mind. His films are still studied by students and directors today. They help us understand how art can challenge our way of thinking. He remains an icon for anyone who loves the magic of cinema.
