Luis Buñuel was a Spanish and Mexican filmmaker of immense global influence.

Many film historians and directors consider him one of the greatest filmmakers ever. His work is defined by avant-garde surrealism, an art style that explores the irrational. He also used his films to provide sharp political commentary. His career was remarkably long, spanning from the 1920s through the 1970s.

Buñuel developed a unique mechanism for creating surrealist cinema. He and his collaborator, Salvador Dalí, worked to eliminate all logical associations. Their primary rule was to reject any idea or image that had a rational explanation. They sought to open doors to the irrational mind. They only accepted images that surprised them without trying to explain why. This method was a direct reaction against the artistic avant-garde of his youth.

His early career was defined by two major surrealist masterpieces. The first was the 16-minute short film *Un Chien Andalou*, released in 1929. The script for this film was written in just six days at Dalí's home. It features startling imagery, such as a woman's eyeball being sliced by a razor. The second major work was *L'Age d'Or*, released in 1930. While originally intended to be a short film with sound, it grew to one hour in length. This production was supported by Marie-Laure and Charles de Noailles.

Buñuel's personal history deeply shaped his creative perspective. He was born on February 22, 1900, in Calanda, Spain.

He grew up in a wealthy family in Zaragoza. During his youth, he received a strict Jesuit education. By age 16, he grew disgusted with the power and wealth of the Church. He later studied philosophy at the University of Madrid. There, he became part of "La Generación del 27," a group of important Spanish artists. This group included the poet Federico García Lorca and the painter Salvador Dalí.

Between 1947 and 1960, Buñuel worked in Mexico to hone his storytelling. During this period, he moved away from pure surrealism toward grounded melodramas. He directed films like *Gran Casino* in 1947 and *Los Olvidados* in 1950. These works helped him master the fundamentals of narrative. He later returned to making unconventional, satirical films that criticized social conditions. For example, *The Exterminating Angel* (1962) and *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* (1972) used satire to examine the bourgeoisie.

Buñuel received massive international recognition throughout his life. His film *Viridiana* won a prize at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival. In 1972, *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also earned the National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Director for *That Obscure Object of Desire* in 1977. His total accolades include five Cannes prizes and two Berlin International Film Festival prizes. He was even nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1968 and 1972.

His legacy connects film to broader intellectual and social movements. Critics have described him as an iconoclast and a revolutionary. Seven of his films were included in the 2012 *Sight & Sound* critics' poll of the top 250 films. His work bridges the gap between pure visual art and political activism. He proved that cinema could be a tool for both dreamlike exploration and social critique. Even today, his films remain essential studies for those interested in the power of the moving image.
