Stabat Mater (Pergolesi)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The *Stabat Mater* is a famous piece of sacred music. It was composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1736. This work is a musical setting of a special text called a sequence. It is one of Pergolesi's most celebrated works. People have loved this music for a very long time. Even after the composer died, the piece became very popular.

The music is made for a small group of performers. It features two solo singers: a soprano and an alto. These singers are joined by a small group of string instruments. This group includes two violins and one viola. The work is divided into twelve different parts called movements. Each movement is named after a specific part of the text. Much of the music comes from an earlier version Pergolesi wrote.

Pergolesi wrote this music during a very difficult time. He was in his final weeks of life. He was suffering from a sickness called tuberculosis. He stayed in a Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli while he worked. He finished the piece shortly before he died. We know he wrote it because his own handwriting is on the manuscript. This original paper is kept at the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino.

This piece was written for a group in Naples called a confraternity. This group had also asked Alessandro Scarlatti to write a *Stabat Mater*. Since then, many famous people have talked about the music. A man named Jean-Jacques Rousseau called the opening duet very perfect. Other composers like Giovanni Paisiello and Joseph Eybler changed the music. Even J.S. Bach made a new piece based on it. However, some people like Padre Martini did not like the light style.

Today, the *Stabat Mater* is still a very important part of music history. You can find many different recordings of it from all over the world. Famous singers like Cecilia Bartoli and Mirella Freni have performed it. Orchestras like the Berlin Philharmonic have played it too. It connects to other famous works through the way composers study it. It shows how music can express deep feelings even when it is written in a light style.
