Gabriel Fauré's Requiem is a famous piece of choral music.

It was written for a Catholic Mass for the Dead. Most of the words are in Latin. One part uses Koine Greek. The music is not meant to be scary. Instead, it focuses on eternal rest and consolation. Fauré said the work shows a human feeling of faith.

It is a very peaceful and comforting piece of art.

The music is organized into seven movements.

It uses a mixed choir and a full orchestra. There is also an organ. Two soloists sing important parts. A soprano sings high notes. A baritone sings lower notes. The choir can have as many as six parts. This makes the sound very rich. A full performance lasts about 35 minutes.

Fauré worked on this music for many years. He began composing it between 1887 and 1890. He revised the music during the 1890s. He finally finished the whole work in 1900. It is not clear why he wrote it. Some think it was about his parents. However, Fauré said he did not write it for any specific reason. He said he wrote it for pleasure.

The first version premiered in 1888.

It was performed for a funeral at La Madeleine in Paris. Fauré was the organist at that church. In that church, only boy singers were allowed. They sang the high treble and alto parts. Later, Fauré used female singers for concert hall shows. The final orchestral version premiered in 1900. This happened during the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Paul Taffanel conducted 250 performers for that show.

This music shares things with other famous works.

It is similar to a Requiem by Johannes Brahms. Both have seven movements. Both use a soprano and a baritone soloist. However, Fauré used Latin texts. Brahms used German Bible quotes. Fauré's music reached the United States in 1931. That was at a concert in Philadelphia. It reached England in 1936. The music was even played at Fauré's own funeral in 1924.
