Gabriel Fauré wrote a famous piece of music called the Requiem.

He worked on it from 1887 to 1900. This music is for a Catholic Mass for the Dead. It uses a choir and an orchestra. It also has a soprano and a baritone singer.

The music focuses on peace and eternal rest. Fauré said the work shows a human feeling of faith. It does not sound scary. Instead, it feels calm and comforting.

The piece has seven parts, or movements. Some parts use Latin words. One part uses Greek words. The first version was played in a church in Paris. In that church, only boy singers were allowed to sing the high parts. Later, Fauré used female singers for concerts. The whole piece takes about 35 minutes to play. It was played at Fauré's own funeral in 1924.

This music is loved for its gentle and beautiful sound.
