It is named after a slow Spanish court dance. This type of dance is a formal procession. The music was written by a French composer named Gabriel Fauré. He wrote it in the year 1887. Even though Fauré said the work was not very important, it became very popular. Many listeners find the music to be elegant and lovely.

Fauré first wrote the piece for a solo piano. Later, he created a version for an orchestra. This orchestra uses strings and several woodwind instruments. These include flutes, oboes, clarinets, and bassoons. He also added two horns to the group.

The music starts with a very famous flute theme. This melody is easy to remember once you hear it. There is also a dramatic middle section. This part uses a series of four-bar sequences. Fauré used a special musical pattern called descending whole tones here.

Fauré composed the orchestral version at a place called Le Vésinet. He did this during the summer of 1887. He originally wanted to play it at small summer concerts. These concerts were led by a conductor named Jules Danbé. Later, Fauré decided to make the piece even grander. He dedicated the work to a woman named Elisabeth, comtesse Greffulhe. Because of her, he added a chorus of singers. These singers perform verses about the romantic feelings of people. The words were written by Robert de Montesquiou.

The orchestral version first played in Paris in 1888. It was performed at a Concert Lamoureux. The conductor for that night was Charles Lamoureux. Three days later, a choral version was performed by the Société nationale de musique. In 1891, a special version with dancers was made. This was for a garden party in the Bois de Boulogne.

In 1917, the Ballets Russes used the music for a ballet. This ballet was called Las Meninas. It featured choreography by a man named Léonide Massine.

Many other famous composers were inspired by Fauré's work. For example, Claude Debussy wrote a piece called Passepied. Maurice Ravel also wrote a piece called Pavane pour une infante défunte.

Fauré's music can be played at different speeds. Some recordings last under five minutes. Other recordings last nearly seven minutes. A conductor named Sir Adrian Boult noted that Fauré liked a brisk tempo. He thought the music should feel light and sprightly. This helps show the playful side of the dancers. The music remains a wonderful part of history today.
