It is known as a masterpiece of the Baroque style. This style of music is often very detailed and ornate. The work tells a story from the Bible. It uses the 26th and 27th chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. The music helps listeners feel the deep emotions of the story.

People value it because it combines beautiful singing with powerful storytelling.

To make this music, Bach used many different voices and instruments. He wrote for two separate choirs and two orchestras.

One choir and orchestra sat in a large organ loft. The second group sat in a small organ loft. This setup allowed the two groups to play at once. The instruments include flutes, oboes, and many strings.

Soloists sing the words of characters like Jesus, Peter, and Judas. Some parts use a special style called recitative to tell the story. Other parts use arias, which are like musical monologues.

Johann Sebastian Bach created this work in the year 1727.

He was the Cantor at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. A poet named Picander wrote the libretto, which is the text for the music. Bach worked closely with him to create poems for the arias. The first performance likely happened on Good Friday in 1727.

Bach later revised the music several times between 1736 and 1746.

Many specific details make this work unique. The music includes hymns called chorales that people already knew. One very old hymn used in the piece dates back to 1525.

Bach also used five stanzas from a hymn by Paul Gerhardt. The work is organized into many movements. Scholars use different systems to number these parts. Some use a system with 68 numbers. Others use a catalog called the BWV system with 78 numbers.

You can think of this music as a musical play. Instead of actors on a stage, the singers use their voices to show feelings. It is similar to how a movie uses a score to set a mood. For example, one aria uses no strings to show a feeling of loss. This helps the listener understand the character's heart. Even today, musicians around the world still perform this amazing work. It connects the history of the church to the art of music.
