He used special techniques like the fugue and the canon. A fugue is a type of musical composition. Bach also used rhythms and styles from other places. He studied music from Italy and France. He liked the Italian style where solo instruments take turns with a full orchestra. He even copied music from Italian composers like Vivaldi to learn their ways. This helped him make his own German music even richer.

Bach was born in Eisenach in 1685.

His father, Johann Ambrosius Bach, was a town musician. The Bach family was full of talented musicians for many generations. Sadly, Bach lost his mother when he was very young. His father died only eight months later. At age ten, Bach lived with his older brother, Johann Christoph. His brother taught him to play the clavichord. Bach also studied Latin and Greek at a local school. He even traveled a very long way on foot to learn from great masters.

This meant he was the music director for four churches. He also worked with the St. Thomas School. Bach had a very large family. He married Maria Barbara Bach and later Anna Magdalena Wilcke. He had many children, and some of them became famous composers too. He lived to be 65 years old. He died in 1750 after complications from eye surgery.

Even after he died, Bach's music stayed important. For a long time, people mostly knew him as an organ player. This changed in 1829 when Felix Mendelssohn performed the St. Matthew Passion.

This performance helped start a new interest in his work. Today, we use a special list called the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis to organize his music. This is often called the BWV. You can hear his music in many places today. Some of his songs are very popular arrangements. One famous example is "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."
