The Magnificat is a grand piece of music written by Johann Sebastian Bach.

It is a musical setting of a famous biblical song. This song is a canticle that tells a story of praise. Bach wrote it for a large group of singers and a full orchestra. The singers use five different voice parts. These are two sopranos, an alto, a tenor, and a bass.

The orchestra adds bright sounds with trumpets and timpani drums. This music is very important to people who love choral art. It is one of Bach's most popular works in the world.

There are two main ways this music is performed. The first version was written in 1723. It is in the key of E-flat major. For Christmas services, Bach added four special songs called laudes. These songs are hymns of praise related to the Christmas feast. This version is called BWV 243.1 in his catalogue.

Bach likely intended for this version to be used for special holidays. He even thought about how the singers would move through the text. Sometimes a soloist sings a line, and then the whole chorus finishes it.

Bach created a second version of the music later on. This version is known as BWV 243.2. He changed the key from E-flat major to D major. He did this for practical reasons regarding the trumpet parts.

Changing the key helped the trumpets play more easily. This second version became the standard for most performances. In the 19th century, people began to play this version more often. It is the version most audiences hear today.

Bach wrote this music while living in the city of Leipzig.

He held the important job of Thomaskantor starting in 1723. This means he was the leader of music at the St. Thomas Church. He stayed in this role until he died in 1750. In Leipzig, the Magnificat was played during many important Sunday services. It was sung in Latin on big holidays like Easter and Pentecost. It was also played on the three Marian feasts. These feasts include the Annunciation, the Purification, and the Visitation.

This music connects to very old traditions and melodies. Bach used a special melodic pattern called the tonus peregrinus. This is a traditional musical formula often used in older chants. He used this pattern as an instrument in one of the movements.

The piece also connects to the story of Mary visiting Elizabeth. This event is why the feast of Visitation is so important. Bach's work shows how he built upon the skills of other composers. He used the ideas of many great musicians to make his own masterpiece.
