The name comes from an Italian word that means "sung." These pieces use voices along with musical instruments. Sometimes a cantata features just one person singing. Other times, it uses a large group called a choir. People use cantatas to share stories or express deep feelings. They are important because they bring people together through song.

There are different ways to perform a cantata. In the past, some pieces used a style called recitative. This is a way of singing that sounds like talking to tell a story. These parts were often joined by an aria. An aria is a beautiful, melodic song. Some cantatas are sacred, which means they are for church services. Others are secular, which means they are for non-religious events.

The history of the cantata began in the early 17th century. It appeared around the same time as opera and oratorio. Before this time, most cultured music was only for voices. As instruments became more common, the cantata grew in many ways. In the 1700s, many cantatas were written for the nobility. They were often played in small rooms for a few people. Over the years, the style changed from solo voices to large choral works.

Many famous composers wrote wonderful cantatas throughout history. Johann Sebastian Bach was a very important composer for this music. He wrote nearly 200 cantatas that still exist today. He often used a baroque orchestra with strings and oboes.

Another composer, Christoph Graupner, wrote over 1,400 cantatas! Graupner used many unique instruments like the chalumeau and the viola d'amore. In the 1800s, composers like Felix Mendelssohn and Johannes Brahms wrote great choral pieces. Even Hector Berlioz wrote cantatas to win important music contests.

You might recognize some cantata music even if you do not know the name. One very famous piece is called Carmina Burana. It was written by the German composer Carl Orff between 1935 and 1936. It is one of the most popular pieces of classical music. Other composers, like Béla Bartók, used folk tales to make their music.
