A choir is a wonderful musical ensemble made of many singers.

People often call these groups a chorus or a chorale. Choirs bring people together to perform all kinds of music. They might sing classical music from the medieval era to today. They can also perform popular music for an audience. Some groups sing in churches, while others perform in theaters or concert halls.

Choirs are special because they turn many individual voices into one beautiful sound.

Leading a choir is a very important job. A conductor or choirmaster uses their hands, arms, and face to guide the singers.

They help the group stay on the correct tempo, which is the speed of the music. A conductor might stand on a raised platform to be seen. They may use a small stick called a baton to make their movements clearer. Most conductors today do not play an instrument while they lead. However, in the past, leaders often played the violin or a harpsichord while directing.

Music can be made in many different ways within a choir. Some groups sing without any instruments at all. This is called a cappella singing, which means singing "as in the chapel."

Other choirs use instruments to help them. They might use a piano, an accordion, or a large pipe organ. Some very large choirs are even accompanied by a full orchestra of 70 to 100 musicians.

Even small groups can now use electronic devices to practice together.

History shows us that singing has many different roles. In many religious traditions, singing is a very important part of worship.

For example, some Christian churches use choirs to lead hymns or sing special pieces called anthems. Some traditions believe the human voice is the best way to worship. Because of this, some groups like certain Jewish synagogues or Eastern Orthodox churches do not use instruments.

This keeps the focus entirely on the sound of the voices.

There are many different types of choirs based on age and gender. An adult mixed choir is very common and uses four main voice parts. These parts are soprano, alto, tenor, and bass.

You might also see a boys' choir or a women's choir. Some groups are even more unique, like a show choir that sings and dances.

There are also signing choirs that use sign language instead of voices.
