A rehearsal is a special way to prepare for a big show.

People use rehearsals to practice their skills. They want to make sure every detail is ready for the audience. This happens in music, dance, and theatre. It also happens in movies and opera. Rehearsals help performers work together as a group. This makes the final performance much better for everyone to watch.

There are many ways a rehearsal can work.

A small group might have only two people. This could be a singer and a pianist. A very large group might have over 100 people. This could be a huge orchestra and a choir. Some groups have a leader to guide them. A conductor leads an orchestra in classical music. A director leads the actors in a play.

Different types of rehearsals help with different jobs.

A "run-through" helps actors learn their lines and movements. A "cue to cue" rehearsal helps the light and sound teams. They practice when to turn on lights or play sounds. This helps them fix any small mistakes early. There is also a "dry tech" where technicians practice without any performers. This allows them to test the equipment on their own.

One of the most important steps is the dress rehearsal.

This is the final practice before the real show. In a play, actors wear their full costumes. They also use props and sets on the stage. In music, the group plays the whole piece from start to finish. Sometimes, an "open dress" rehearsal lets a small audience watch. These guests might be family, friends, or people who pay a lower price.

Rehearsals help keep a show high quality even if things change.

If a main actor cannot perform, an "understudy" takes their place. Understudies have special rehearsals to learn their new roles. They practice with the real sets and costumes. This helps them feel confident if they must step in quickly. In Japanese Noh theatre, performers have a different way. They mostly rehearse alone and only meet a few days before the show. This honors the idea of "one chance, one meeting."
