A concert band is a large group of musicians playing together.

These groups use woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Sometimes they add a piano, a harp, or a double bass. Some bands even use electric guitars or synthesizers. Most concert bands stay in one place while they perform. This is different from a marching band that moves. They play many kinds of music, like marches or popular songs. They also play pieces written just for wind instruments.

Learning how a band works is very interesting. A conductor, or director, leads the whole group. In a large band, there can be 200 members. They play from about 35 different musical parts. Some groups, called wind ensembles, are smaller and more precise. In these groups, players often play only one part each. This helps them play tricky music with great detail. In school bands, students often move up through different levels. A "Wind Ensemble" is usually the most advanced group.

These bands have a very long and colorful history. Large bands gathered during the French Revolution for big festivals. They played loud music to catch everyone's attention. In the 1800s, many bands were part of the military. They used drums and bugles to signal troops. Later, these bands played for ceremonies and fun parties. In the 1900s, composers began writing new music just for bands. Gustav Holst wrote a famous piece called "First Suite for Band" in 1909.

Many different kinds of bands exist all over the world today. Professional bands, like the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, are very hard to join. There are also community bands made of volunteers. These people play for fun in their own towns. The Allentown Band in Pennsylvania is the oldest civilian band in America. Some bands are even started by kings, like the Royal Hawaiian Band. Even schools have bands to help students learn music. These groups help people share their love of playing instruments.

Bands connect to many things you might already know. You might have seen a band in a school parade. You might have heard a military band at a ceremony. Even the way instruments are made has changed how bands sound. In the past, instruments were hard to play in tune. Now, they are much better and easier to use. This allows bands to play very fast and beautiful music. Whether it is a small school group or a huge professional band, they all bring people together through sound.
