Some bands aim for perfect precision and uniformity. Other bands want to be as entertaining as possible for the crowd. Some even use comedy in their shows. A type called a Scramble band does not march in time with the music. Instead, they scramble from one design to another.

In a parade, members stay in straight lines called ranks and files. They try to keep a steady step size. This is often between 22 and 30 inches per stride.

Marching bands have a very long history. They grew out of European military bands from the Baroque period.

In the 1700s, British Army regiments had their own bands. Musicians used instruments like drums and fifes to give orders on battlefields. Music helped tell soldiers when to advance or retire. In the United States, marching bands became popular at football games. The University of Notre Dame Band of the Fighting Irish performed at a game in 1887.

Many bands perform amazing shows on a large field. This is called drill. Musicians move to form pictures, geometric shapes, or abstract designs.

Uniforms help the band look like a single, strong group. Most members wear special outfits that show their school colors.

Some uniforms include tall hats called shakos with feather plumes. Others might wear Trojan helmets or even kilts. Uniforms can also help show movement. For example, some bands wear stripes on their legs to highlight their walking. Some bands even use special costumes that fit a specific theme.
