A Mass is a special kind of musical composition. It is made to match the parts of a Christian church service. These parts are called the Ordinary because they do not change from service to service. Most Masses use Latin, which was the sacred language of the Catholic Church. However, many are also written in other languages like English. Musicians can perform these pieces in different ways. Some are sung a cappella, which means voices sing without any instruments. Other Masses use a single instrument or even a huge orchestra.

There are many ways to build the music in a Mass. In the Renaissance, composers often used a technique called cantus firmus. This means they took an existing melody, like a Gregorian chant, and used it as a base. They might put this melody in the tenor voice. Some composers used secular songs instead of religious ones. One famous song called "L'homme armé" was used in more than 40 different Masses. Other composers used a technique called parody. This is when they take several different voices from an older piece of music to create a new one.

The history of the Mass goes back many centuries. The earliest settings were simple Gregorian chants. The different parts of the Ordinary arrived at different times. The Kyrie was likely the first part, appearing as early as the 7th century. The Credo was the last part to join the Roman mass in 1014. In the 14th century, composers began writing polyphonic music. This is music where many different melodic lines are sung at once. The first complete Mass we can name belongs to Guillaume de Machaut. He wrote the Messe de Nostre Dame during this time.

As time passed, the style of the Mass changed a lot. In the 16th century, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina was a very important composer. He wrote the Missa Papae Marcelli, which is named after Pope Marcellus. During the Baroque and Classical times, some Masses became very grand. These were called missa solemnis and were often festive. Other Masses were called missa brevis, which means they were shorter and more compact. In the 1800s, some composers wrote Masses that sounded like symphonies. They used solo singers and large groups of instruments to create different colors of sound.

Today, the Mass is still a very important part of music history. Some people perform them in church during a service. Others perform them in concert halls for people to listen to as art. In the 20th century, there were new rules for how to write them. Pope Pius X wanted music to be integrated and not just a collection of different parts. He also liked the old style of plainchant and polyphony. Even with these changes, the Mass continues to thrive. It connects us to hundreds of years of beautiful singing and history.
