It is made for church services. Most Masses use the same parts of a service. These parts are called the Ordinary. Some Masses are sung in Latin. Others use local languages like English.

Musicians can sing without any instruments. This is called a cappella. Other Masses use a full orchestra. In the Middle Ages, people sang simple chants. Later, they wrote music with many voices. This style is called polyphony.

Many composers used old tunes to make new music. They often used a chant called a cantus firmus. Some used a famous song called L'homme armé. This song was used in over 40 different Masses.

In the Renaissance, the Mass was a very big deal. Composers like Josquin des Prez were very famous. Later, the music changed again. Some Masses became short and simple. Others became long and grand like a symphony. Today, people still perform Masses in church and in concert halls. It is a way to share beautiful sounds and history.
