The St Matthew Passion, cataloged as BWV 244, is a sacred oratorio. An oratorio is a large-scale musical work for voices and orchestra. This specific masterpiece was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727. It tells a religious story using the 26th and 27th chapters of the Gospel of Matthew. The work is famous for its complex structure and emotional depth. It is considered a pinnacle of Baroque sacred music.

Bach built the music using a double-choir and double-orchestra format. This means there are two distinct groups of singers and musicians. In the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, these groups occupied different spaces. One group sat in the large organ loft. The second group sat in the small organ loft on the opposite side.

This physical separation allowed the two orchestras to interact musically. The instrumentation is quite diverse for the time. Both groups use transverse flutes, oboes, and various string instruments. Choir I also includes specialized instruments like the oboe da caccia and the lute.

The musical structure relies on several different vocal styles. The narration of the Bible text is performed by a tenor soloist. He uses a style called secco recitative. In secco recitative, the singer is accompanied only by the basso continuo. This provides a clear, speech-like way to move the story forward. Other characters, such as Jesus, Peter, and Judas, also sing in recitative. To express deep emotion, Bach uses arias. An aria is a lyrical, monologue-like movement. Some arias use a single solo instrument to create a specific mood. For example, one soprano aria lacks strings to suggest a sense of loss.

Bach also integrated chorales, which are traditional hymns, into the work. These chorales appear in several different ways. Some are simple four-part settings that the congregation would recognize. Others serve as a cantus firmus. A cantus firmus is a pre-existing melody used as the foundation for a larger musical structure. In the massive opening chorus, a soprano part sings a hymn melody over complex polyphonic textures.

This creates a sense of great tension and grandeur. Bach used hymns dating as far back as 1525. He also included five stanzas from a hymn by Paul Gerhardt.

The history of the work involves careful collaboration and revision. Bach worked with a poet named Christian Friedrich Henrici. Henrici used the pen name Picander to publish the libretto in 1729. The libretto provides the poetic text for the arias and choruses. While the Bible provides the core story, Picander's verses provide the emotional commentary. Modern research suggests the first performance was likely on Good Friday, April 11, 1727. Bach performed the work several times in Leipzig. He also created a revised version between 1743 and 1746.

Scholars organize the many movements of the piece using different numbering systems. Because Bach did not number the sections himself, modern editors had to decide how to categorize them. The Neue Bach-Ausgabe, or New Bach Edition, uses a system of 68 numbers. The older Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis, or BWV catalog, uses a system of 78 numbers. Both systems use letters to mark certain subsections. These numbers help musicians and historians navigate the complex layers of the oratorio. Even though the numbering varies, the musical content remains a unified whole.

The St Matthew Passion connects religious liturgy with high musical art. It was designed for the specific acoustic and physical space of the St. Thomas Church. The use of two choirs reflects the musical traditions Bach used in his Sunday services. By combining ancient hymns with new poetry, Bach bridged the gap between the past and his own time. The work remains a vital part of the musical world today. It shows how music can turn a written text into a profound human experience.
