Nocturnes (Chopin)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The nocturnes of Frédéric Chopin are a collection of short solo piano works. Chopin composed 21 of these pieces between 1827 and 1846. These compositions are considered among the finest short works for the piano. They remain a vital part of modern concert repertoire. A nocturne is a musical form meant to evoke a specific mood. Chopin's versions are famous for their deep emotional resonance.

To create the specific sound of a nocturne, a pianist uses several distinct techniques. The right hand typically plays a song-like melody. This melody is intended to mimic the quality of a human vocal line. This technique provides the piece with significant emotional depth. Meanwhile, the left hand plays broken chords to establish a steady rhythm. This rhythmic foundation supports the melodic singing of the right hand.

Another essential element is the extensive use of the piano pedal. The pedal allows notes to sustain and blend together. This creates an aura of drama and helps express complex emotions. Chopin also introduced more freely flowing rhythms into the form. This technique was based on classical music styles. He further expanded the music through the use of counterpoint. Counterpoint involves playing different melodic lines at once to create musical tension.

Chopin did not invent the nocturne, but he greatly expanded its potential. He built upon the form originally developed by the Irish composer John Field. Chopin was a great admirer of Field's composing techniques. In his youth, people even said Chopin sounded like Field. However, Field held a negative view of Chopin's abilities. In 1832, Field described Chopin as a "sickroom talent." Despite this, Chopin continued to find inspiration in Field's work throughout his life.

Chopin also drew structural inspiration from other musical traditions. He looked to the sonata form for organization. He also studied the arias found in Italian and French opera. The composer Franz Liszt suggested that Chopin's nocturnes were influenced by the bel canto arias of Vincenzo Bellini. Many music historians agree with this observation. Some scholars believe the "Chopin nocturne" represents a unique blend. They see it as a mix of Field's structure and the sound of Mozart.

The publication history of these 21 pieces is quite interesting. Numbers 1 through 18 were published during Chopin's lifetime. They were usually released in groups of two or three. These were published in the order they were composed. However, numbers 19 and 20 were actually written earlier. They were composed before Chopin left Poland but were published after his death. Number 21 was not originally called a nocturne. It was only identified as such when it was published in 1938.

Chopin's impact on the musical world was profound and lasting. While early critics had mixed reactions, they later changed their minds. Many eventually held his compositions in the highest regard. His work influenced many famous composers, including Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner. Other masters like Mendelssohn, Schumann, and Liszt praised his genius. Gabriel Fauré was especially influenced, composing thirteen nocturnes himself. Today, specific pieces like Op. 9 No. 2 and Op. 27 No. 2 remain incredibly popular.
