A nocturne is a short piece of music. Chopin did not invent this style. He learned from an Irish composer named John Field. Chopin grew to admire Field very much. He used many of Field's ideas. One idea was a song-like melody in the right hand. This makes the music sound like a human voice. This helps the listener feel deep emotions.

Chopin also used the left hand for rhythm. He played broken chords to help the melody. He used the piano pedal to hold notes longer. This adds a sense of drama to the sound. Chopin made the music even more special. He used free rhythms and complex structures. He even used ideas from Italian opera. Some people say his music sounds like Mozart too.

Critics had mixed feelings at first. Now, people hold his work in high regard. Many famous composers were inspired by him. These pieces remain very popular in concerts today.
