He called these songs ballades. They are very hard to play. They are also very important pieces of music. The word ballade can mean a dance. It can also mean a story song. Chopin was a pioneer of this music style. He may have been inspired by a poet named Adam Mickiewicz.

Each of the four songs is unique. One critic said they are all different. They share a sense of nobility. They also have a romantic feel. Chopin used a special way to build his music. He used a mirror reprise. This means he plays two themes in reverse order. Modern experts say the songs share a special meter.

Chopin wrote the first ballade in Paris in 1835. He wrote the second one in France and Spain. The third one was made in Nohant. He finished the fourth ballade in 1842. Many famous piano players record these songs. Krystian Zimerman has a very important recording. Other players like Arthur Rubinstein also play them. These songs changed how other composers wrote music.
