Johannes Brahms was a famous composer.

He wrote 21 lively dance tunes. These are called his Hungarian Dances. He finished them in 1879. Most of these tunes use themes from Hungary. Brahms loved this style of music.

Brahms met a violinist named Ede Reményi. This meeting helped him learn new sounds. He heard a style called csárdás. This is a type of dance music. It became the base for his dances. Some dances were his own ideas. Others used tunes he found elsewhere. For example, Dance No. 5 used a song by Béla Kéler. Brahms thought it was a folk song.

Many people play these dances today. Brahms first wrote them for two people to play on one piano. Later, he wrote some for one person to play. Other musicians made versions for large groups of instruments. These groups are called orchestras. Even films use his music. A comedy film used Dance No. 4 for its theme. People still enjoy these dances. They are some of his most popular works.
