Piano Concerto (Grieg)

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Piano Concerto in A minor is a famous piece of music.

Edvard Grieg wrote it in 1868. He was only 24 years old at the time. This was the only concerto he ever finished. The music lasts about 30 minutes when played.

The piece has three parts called movements. The first part starts with a loud drum roll. This leads to a big, fast part for the piano. The second part is slow and lyrical. The third part is very energetic. It sounds like a Norwegian dance called a halling. It even sounds like a folk fiddle from Grieg's home.

Grieg used many instruments to play this work. It needs a solo piano and many others. These include flutes, oboes, and clarinets. There are also horns, trumpets, and trombones. The music also uses drums and strings like violins.

This work was the first piano concerto ever recorded. A man named Wilhelm Backhaus recorded it in 1909. Even though it was recorded long ago, people still love it. It has even appeared in movies and video games.
