It features a soloist. This is one person playing an instrument. They play with a large group called an orchestra. The word concerto comes from an Italian word. It means a gathering or an accord. It can also mean a competition or a battle.

Most concertos have three parts. These parts are called movements. A typical concerto starts with a fast movement. The middle part is slow. The last part is fast again.

In the past, concertos were very short. They might last only ten minutes. Later, composers like Beethoven made them much longer. Some lasted over thirty minutes.

Many instruments can be the star. The violin and piano are very common. The cello also became very popular. Today, people write concertos for many things. You can hear them for the flute or the horn. Some even use folk instruments like the balalaika. There is even a concerto for a rock band!
