An aria is a song for one singer.

It is often part of a larger work like an opera. An aria helps show a character's deep feelings. It also lets singers show off their great skill.

In the 1700s, many arias had a special shape. One kind was the da capo aria. This means "from the head." The singer performs the first part, then a middle part, and then repeats the first part. During the repeat, they often add fancy notes. Another part was the ritornello. This is a short piece played by instruments. It returns between the singing parts.

Sometimes, the word aria was used for music without singers. For example, J.S. Bach wrote the Goldberg Variations for the keyboard. These pieces were modeled after vocal music. Later, composers like Gluck changed how arias worked. He wanted the music to fit the story better. He wanted the words and music to be just as important. This helped the songs feel more real to the audience.
