A leitmotif is a short, recurring musical phrase.

It is linked to a person, a place, or an idea. The name comes from German words meaning "leading motif."

This musical idea can be a melody. It can also be a rhythm or a set of chords.

Composers use leitmotifs to tell a story without words. They help bind a work together. The music can change to show new feelings. For example, a hero might have a bright tune. A villain might have a dark version of that same tune.

Richard Wagner used hundreds of these in his famous operas.

Today, we hear leitmotifs in many places. You can hear them in movies and video games. John Williams uses them in Star Wars. He has themes for Darth Vader and the Force. You can also hear them in the Jaws movies. A simple pattern of two notes tells you a shark is near. Even Super Mario uses these themes for different levels and characters.
