Most orchestras have four main groups. The strings use instruments like violins and cellos. The woodwinds use flutes and oboes. The brass group uses trumpets and tubas. The percussion group uses drums and cymbals.

A conductor leads the group. They use a thin stick called a baton. The conductor sets the speed and the sound. They also lead rehearsals to prepare the players. The leader of the first violins is the concertmaster. This person also helps lead the musicians.

Orchestras can be different sizes. A large symphony orchestra may have over one hundred players.

A smaller group is called a chamber orchestra. These groups often have fewer than fifty musicians.

Orchestras have changed over a long time. In the past, they were often small. Composers like Beethoven helped make the orchestra a standard size. Later, Richard Wagner and Gustav Mahler wrote music for very big groups. Today, orchestras play many kinds of music. They even use electronic instruments sometimes.
