Musicians can play them in many ways. You might pluck a string with your fingers. This is called pizzicato. You can also use a pick to pluck. Some players use a bow. A bow is a stick with horsehair. They rub the bow across the strings. This makes the strings vibrate.

Most string instruments have a hollow body. This body helps the sound travel. The hollow space makes the sound louder for people to hear.

There are three main groups of these instruments. Lutes have a neck and a body. A guitar and a violin are lutes. Harps have strings inside a frame. Zithers have strings on a body or a tube.

Some instruments use electricity to make sound. An electric guitar connects to an amplifier. This is a loud box. It lets the player be heard in big bands. Some players even use pedals to make new sounds. These tools help make rock and jazz music.
