A player can make sound in a few ways. They can use a bow. This is called arco. They can also pluck the strings with their fingers. This is called pizzicato.

In jazz, players often pluck the strings very fast. In some rock styles, they even slap the strings.

The bass is made from different types of wood. The top is made of spruce. The back is often made of maple. The fingerboard is made of ebony.

This wood helps the instrument make a rich sound.

Players usually stand up to play. They might also sit on a high stool. They lean the big instrument against their body. This helps them reach the strings easily. The bass has sloped shoulders to help with this. This shape makes it different from a violin.
