It belongs to the violin family. It is slightly larger than a violin. This makes its sound deeper and more mellow.

A player is called a violist. They hold the instrument on their shoulder. They use a bow to play the strings. The bow uses horsehair to make sound. The bow for a viola is heavier than a violin bow. It also has a wider band of hair.

Violists must play in a special way. They use thicker strings. This means they must press harder. They also move the bow with more weight. This helps the thick strings vibrate well.

Most viola music uses the alto clef. This is a special way to write notes. It is not used much by other instruments.

Players tune the four strings using pegs. They also use small knobs called fine tuners. These help make the pitch just right. The strings are tuned to C, G, D, and A. This makes the viola the middle voice in a group. It sits between the high violin and the low cello.
