This type of voice is quite rare. Most women sing in higher ranges. A contralto can sing notes that sound deep and rich.

Their range is often similar to a countertenor. A countertenor is a man who sings in a low female range.

There are three main kinds of contralto voices. First is the coloratura contralto. This voice is agile and can sing fast, fancy parts. Second is the lyric contralto. This voice is lighter in sound. Third is the dramatic contralto. This voice is deep, dark, and bold.

In operas, these singers take on many roles. They often play villains or witches. Sometimes they even play male characters. One famous role is Little Buttercup.

This role is for a lyric contralto. Many people love the power of these deep voices.
