A contralto is a special kind of female singing voice. It is the lowest voice type for women in classical music. This type of voice is quite rare to find.

A contralto can sing very deep and rich notes. Their range is often similar to a mezzo-soprano. It is also almost the same as a countertenor. A countertenor is a man who sings in a low female range. Most contraltos sing from an F below middle C up to an F above it. Some can even reach much lower or higher notes.

There are three main ways to describe a contralto voice. First is the coloratura contralto. This voice is very agile and can sing fast, fancy musical passages. The composer Rossini loved this specific voice type for his music. Second is the lyric contralto. This voice has a lighter sound or timbre. It is used a lot in French and English operas. One famous role for this voice is Ma Moss in The Tender Land. Third is the dramatic contralto. This voice is deep, dark, and bold. You can hear this type in many German operas. Examples include the roles of Erda and Gaea.

History shows us how these voices have been used for a long time. The term contralto is mostly used for classical and opera singing. In 1702, an opera called Tancrède was written by André Campra. It featured a character named Clorinde. This role was written for Julie d'Aubigny. Many people believe it was the first major role for this voice in French opera. Even though the music uses a soprano clef, it is a famous early example.

Finding true operatic contraltos can be hard because they are so rare. Because of this, there are not many roles written just for them. These singers often play different kinds of characters in stories. They might play feminine roles like Rosina in The Barber of Seville. However, they often play villains or even male characters. Some singers even take on roles originally made for castrati. There is even a common saying about them. People say they might only play "witches, bitches, or britches."

Many different people have shown the power of the low female voice. The famous Iranian singer Hayedeh was one such person. Another singer was the child prodigy Ruby Helder. Even in film, stars like Zarah Leander used these deep registers. There is even a Guinness World Record for the lowest note by a woman. That record belongs to Helen Leahey, who sang a D2. These singers show how beautiful and strong a low voice can be.
