Tenor

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A tenor is a special kind of male singing voice. It is the highest type of voice for men using their chest voice. This means the sound comes from the chest rather than a lighter head voice. The word tenor comes from the Latin word "tenere," which means "to hold."

Long ago, the tenor was a very important part of music. It often held a main melody that other voices followed. In early music, the tenor was even the lowest voice in a group. Over time, the role of the tenor changed as music grew more complex.

In a choir, the tenor voice has a specific place. In a four-part mixed chorus, it is the second lowest voice. It sits above the bass but below the alto and soprano voices. In men's groups, the first tenor is often the highest voice. Most choral music asks tenors to sing from B2 up to A4. However, some music asks them to go even higher. It can sometimes be hard to find enough tenor singers for a choir. Many men prefer to sing in the bass section instead.

There are many different styles of tenor voices in opera. A leggero tenor has a light and very fast voice. This singer can perform difficult, quick notes called fioritura. A lyric tenor has a warm and bright sound. This voice is strong enough to be heard over a large orchestra.

A spinto tenor is similar to a lyric tenor but with more weight. This allows them to sing through big, dramatic moments in a story.

Some tenors have voices that are very large and powerful. A dramatic tenor has a ringing and heroic sound. These singers can sometimes sing as low as A-flat 2. The heldentenor, or "heroic tenor," is a very dark and strong voice. This type of singer is often used in German operas. These roles require great power and a lot of stamina. A famous role for a heldentenor is Siegfried in the operas of Wagner. These singers must be very strong to finish such long parts.

Tenors can sing a wide range of notes depending on the music. In opera, a tenor might sing a high C, which is one octave above middle C. Some very special roles even ask for a note as high as F5. One famous singer, Nicolai Gedda, was known for singing very high notes. Another singer, Gilbert Duprez, was the first to sing a high C using his chest voice.
