Countertenor

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A countertenor is a special kind of male singer. Their voice can reach very high notes. These notes are similar to a female contralto or mezzo-soprano voice. Most countertenors sing from around E3 up to D5 or E5.

Some very high singers are called sopranists. A sopranist can reach even higher, like a soprano voice. This type of singing is a wonderful skill to hear. It allows men to sing melodies that are usually for women.

Singing this way involves different parts of the voice. Many countertenors use a technique called falsetto. This is a way to sing in a high "head voice." They also use their "chest voice" for lower notes. The chest voice sounds more like a person's normal speaking voice. One hard job for these singers is the middle range. They must blend the two styles smoothly around the note B3. This makes the transition between high and low sound natural.

This way of singing has a very long history. In the 1400s, musicians used a part called the "contratenor." This part was added to other melodies to make music richer. By the year 1450, this part split into two. One was called the "contratenor altus" and was higher. The other was the "contratenor bassus" and was lower. Over time, these names changed in different countries like Italy and France. In England, the name became the countertenor we use today.

In the past, the voice was used in many ways. During the Renaissance, women were not allowed to sing in churches. Countertenors sang the high parts in these religious services. Later, in the 1600s, a different singer called a castrato became popular in opera. By the late 1600s, castrati were very famous in Italian opera. In England, the composer Henry Purcell wrote important music for countertenors. He wrote parts for his music in 1692, like in "The Fairy-Queen."

Today, the countertenor voice is very popular again. In the 1900s, singers like Alfred Deller helped bring it back. He was a famous English singer who loved early music. Another pioneer was Russell Oberlin in America. Now, countertenors sing in many different places. They sing roles in operas that were once for castrati. They also sing in modern music and choral groups. Groups like The King's Singers use this voice for folk songs and gospel music too.
