His real name was Carlo Maria Michelangelo Nicola Broschi. He was an Italian soprano castrato, a type of singer with a very high and bright voice. People across Europe traveled to hear him sing. He was not just a singer, but also a composer and a musician. His skill was so great that he became a legend in the 18th century.

His singing was a display of incredible skill and control. He had a voice that was full, rich, and bright. One expert noted that his breath control was extraordinary. He could sing very wide musical intervals with great ease. He was also a master of ornamentation, which means adding quick, decorative notes to a melody.

Some songs he sang were so fast and complex that even violins struggled to keep up. He could make a note grow from a tiny sound to a huge volume and back again.

Carlo was born in Andria, Italy, into a family of musicians. His father, Salvatore Broschi, was a composer and a leader of music at a cathedral. The family moved to the city of Naples when Carlo was young. In Naples, he studied with a famous teacher named Nicola Porpora. After his father died in 1717, Carlo underwent a medical operation called castration. This was done so he could keep his high soprano voice. He made his professional debut at age fifteen in a work called "Angelica e Medoro."

Farinelli traveled to many great cities to perform for royalty. He sang in Rome, Vienna, Venice, and Milan. In 1724, he visited the Imperial Theatre in Vienna at an invitation. He also performed in Venice during the Carnival season in 1729. In 1734, he moved to London to join the Opera of the Nobility. His presence helped the company become successful and earn money. He earned a high salary of £1500 per season, but fans gave him even more in gifts. Some estimates suggest his total earnings reached about £5000.

His talent brought people together through shared wonder. In London, his singing was so moving that a singer named Senesino forgot his role and embraced him. Some fans were so excited that they shouted, "One God, one Farinelli!"

His life shows how music can connect different countries and classes. Even though he lived hundreds of years ago, his name is still remembered by music historians. He remains a symbol of the incredible power of the human voice.
