He is best known for writing libretti, which are the words for opera seria. This is a serious kind of musical drama. His words were special because they were meant to be sung. They felt musical, clear, and songlike to the listeners. People loved his work because it captured deep human feelings. His stories helped great singers show off their amazing skills.

Metastasio wrote his stories with music in mind. He used lyrics for two or three voices at a time. These lyrics showed the different passions of the characters in a plot. He often wrote very quickly to meet his goals. For example, he once wrote the play Ipermestra in just nine days.

He understood every tiny detail of how his words worked with music. This made his plays perfect for the great singers of his time.

His journey began in Rome, where he was born in 1698. As a young boy, he could make up poems instantly. A man named Gravina noticed this talent and became his protector. Gravina gave him the name Metastasio and helped him study law. Later, a singer named Marianna Bulgarelli helped him become a professional writer. She encouraged him to leave his law job to focus on musical drama. She even took his whole family into her own home.

In 1729, Metastasio moved to Vienna to work for the royal court.

He earned 3,000 florins a year for his important job. He lived in Vienna for forty years before he died in 1782. He left a large fortune of 130,000 florins to his friends.

Metastasio's influence reached all over the world. His poems were translated into English, French, German, Spanish, and Greek.

Many famous composers used his words for their music. These included names like Johann Adolph Hasse and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Even after he died, his works were still being performed. His writing helped shape the way people experienced opera for many years. He remains one of the most important writers in the history of music.
