Many people call him the "founder of Italian tragedy." A tragedy is a serious type of play. He wrote nineteen of these plays during his life. He also wrote sonnets, satires, and an autobiography. His writing had a big effect on British Romantic poetry later on. He was a man who cared deeply about freedom and dignity.

Alfieri had a very specific way of writing his plays. He did not use many fancy decorations or extra details. Instead, he focused on one main action and one strong feeling. This kept the story very focused and intense. He often used stories from Greek myths or history. His characters were usually "heroes of freedom." These heroes fought against tyrants, who are rulers with too much power. Often, these heroes felt very alone in their big struggle. This special feeling is sometimes called a "titanic" hero.

Alfieri's life was full of travel and big changes. He was born in Asti in the Kingdom of Sardinia. When he was young, his father died. He later went to a school in Turin. He traveled to many places like France and the Netherlands. He even went to the north of Sweden. He liked seeing the wild forests and lakes there. These places helped him think about deep and serious ideas. He also traveled to England to buy horses. He loved riding and horses for his whole life.

His personal life was also quite famous and complicated.

He had a very difficult relationship with a woman named Louise. She was known as the Countess of Albany. They eventually lived together for many years. They spent time in places like Paris and Alsace. Alfieri also had a famous scandal in London. This event involved a woman named Lady Penelope Ligonier. It was a very big story in the news back then. These life events often shaped his writing and his moods.

In his later years, Alfieri found a sense of peace. He moved to the city of Florence. He spent his last ten years living there. He spent much of his time studying old Greek books. He worked hard on writing comedies during this time. This hard work eventually made him very ill. He died in Florence in 1803. He is buried in the Church of Santa Croce. His tomb was made by the artist Antonio Canova. He lies there next to the writer Machiavelli.
