He was famous for writing operas and sacred music for churches. His talent was so great that Ludwig van Beethoven called him the best living composer of his time. The famous composer Rossini also praised his operas. Cherubini's music helped bridge the gap between different styles of music history. People still study his works to understand how music changed during his life.

His journey into music started very early in his life.

He was born in Florence, Italy, in 1760. His father, Bartolomeo, was a maestro al cembalo, or a leader of an ensemble. Luigi began learning music from his father when he was only six years old. He was a child prodigy, which means he learned very fast. By the age of thirteen, he was already writing religious music. In 1780, he won a scholarship to study in Bologna and Milan.

Cherubini spent much of his adult life in France.

Cherubini eventually moved to France almost permanently. He even used a French version of his name. He worked as a director for the Théâtre de Monsieur in 1789. This job helped him find the best stories to turn into operas.
