He was widely recognized for his significant contributions to opera and sacred music. His musical talent earned him immense respect from the greatest musicians of his age. Ludwig van Beethoven famously described Cherubini as the greatest living composer of his era. Similarly, the composer Rossini offered heavy praise and interpretation of Cherubini's operas. His work served as a vital link between different musical styles and periods.

Cherubini's musical education began in Florence, Italy, in 1760.

He was born Maria Luigi Carlo Zenobio Salvatore Cherubini. His father, Bartolomeo, served as a maestro al cembalo, or ensemble leader. Cherubini began formal instruction at the age of six under his father's guidance. As a child prodigy, he quickly mastered counterpoint and dramatic style. By age thirteen, he had already composed several religious works. In 1780, the Grand Duke of Tuscany awarded him a scholarship to study in Bologna and Milan.

His professional career involved significant travel and cultural adaptation. In 1785, he traveled to London to produce several operas for the King's Theatre. During an excursion to Paris, the violinist Giovanni Battista Viotti introduced him to Marie Antoinette. Cherubini eventually settled in France, where he adopted a French version of his name.

He became the director of the Théâtre de Monsieur in 1789. This role allowed him to study many libretti, which are texts used for operas. This access helped him develop a more original and daring musical style.

Cherubini produced several landmark operas that defined his early success. His first major hit was Lodoïska in 1791, noted for its realistic heroism. He followed this with Elisa in 1794, which was set in the Swiss Alps. His most famous work was the opera Médée, composed in 1797.

Later, he wrote Les deux journées in 1800, which featured a simplified musical style. These works were performed at major venues like the Théâtre Feydeau and the Opéra-Comique.

As musical tastes shifted, Cherubini transitioned from opera toward sacred music. He found that Parisian audiences began favoring younger composers like Boieldieu. Consequently, he focused on writing masses, requiems, and other choral pieces. He wrote seven masses and two requiems during this period. One notable work was his Requiem in C minor, composed in 1816. This piece commemorated the anniversary of the execution of King Louis XVI. It received great admiration from composers such as Schumann and Brahms.

Cherubini also made important contributions to chamber music and musical theory. He composed six string quartets, with Nos. 1 and 3 considered masterworks. He also wrote a String Quintet for two violins, viola, and two cellos. In 1835, he completed a textbook titled Cours de contrepoint et de fugue.

This book served as a formal guide to musical composition. In 1822, he assumed the role of director at the Conservatoire de Paris. While he held this position, he occasionally clashed with the young composer Hector Berlioz.

Throughout his life, Cherubini earned the highest honors in France. In 1814, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. By 1841, he became a Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur, a distinction he was the first musician to receive.
