Luigi Cherubini was a prominent composer during the Classical and Romantic eras.
Cherubini's musical education began in Florence, Italy, in 1760.
His professional career involved significant travel and cultural adaptation. In 1785, he traveled to London to produce several operas for the King's Theatre. During an excursion to Paris, the violinist Giovanni Battista Viotti introduced him to Marie Antoinette. Cherubini eventually settled in France, where he adopted a French version of his name.
Cherubini produced several landmark operas that defined his early success. His first major hit was Lodoïska in 1791, noted for its realistic heroism. He followed this with Elisa in 1794, which was set in the Swiss Alps. His most famous work was the opera Médée, composed in 1797.
As musical tastes shifted, Cherubini transitioned from opera toward sacred music. He found that Parisian audiences began favoring younger composers like Boieldieu. Consequently, he focused on writing masses, requiems, and other choral pieces. He wrote seven masses and two requiems during this period. One notable work was his Requiem in C minor, composed in 1816. This piece commemorated the anniversary of the execution of King Louis XVI. It received great admiration from composers such as Schumann and Brahms.
Cherubini also made important contributions to chamber music and musical theory. He composed six string quartets, with Nos. 1 and 3 considered masterworks. He also wrote a String Quintet for two violins, viola, and two cellos. In 1835, he completed a textbook titled Cours de contrepoint et de fugue.
Throughout his life, Cherubini earned the highest honors in France. In 1814, he was named a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. By 1841, he became a Commandeur de la Légion d'honneur, a distinction he was the first musician to receive.
