He was a talented violinist and an organist. He is known as a leading figure of the Neapolitan school of music. Even though he died very young, his work remains very important. His music helped change how people thought about opera and church music. People still study his songs to understand the style of his time.

Pergolesi was a master of opera buffa, which is a type of comic opera. One of his most famous pieces is La serva padrona. This work was actually part of a larger opera called Il prigionier superbo. It was first performed on August 28, 1733. This small comic piece became so popular that it stood on its own. In 1752, it was performed in Paris and caused a huge debate. This event was called the Querelle des Bouffons, or the "quarrel of the comic actors."

He also wrote beautiful sacred music for religious services. His most famous sacred work is the Stabat Mater, written around 1735 or 1736. This piece is written for soprano and alto singers. It also uses a string orchestra and a basso continuo. The Confraternita dei Cavalieri di San Luigi di Palazzo commissioned this work. It was meant for a Good Friday meditation. This piece was so popular that it was the most printed music of the 1700s. Even Johann Sebastian Bach studied it and made his own version.

Pergolesi was born in Jesi, Italy, in 1710. His family came from a nearby place called Pergola. This is why people often called him "Pergolesi." He studied music with Francesco Santi in Jesi. Later, he moved to Naples in 1725 to study with teachers like Gaetano Greco. He worked for wealthy leaders like Prince Ferdinando Colonna and Duke Domenico Marzio Carafa. Sadly, he died of tuberculosis in Pozzuoli at only 26 years old. He was buried in a monastery one day after he died.

Because he was so famous, many people wrongly claimed he wrote certain songs. For a long time, people thought he wrote over five hundred pieces. Today, experts say he only wrote about thirty true works. This happened because people wanted to sell music using his famous name. His music has even appeared in many modern movies. You might hear his songs in films like Amadeus or Farinelli. His life shows how a short career can leave a huge mark on the world.
