Giovanni Battista Pergolesi was a highly influential Italian composer of the Baroque period.

He was a skilled violinist and organist who became a leading figure of the Neapolitan school. Although his professional career was very short, his musical contributions were massive. He helped shape the direction of both comic opera and sacred music. His ability to create high artistic value in a few years remains a subject of study. Even today, his melodies continue to resonate in concert halls and films.

Pergolesi was a pioneer of opera buffa, which is a style of comic opera. One of his most significant works was the intermezzo La serva padrona, or "The Maid Turned Mistress." This piece was originally part of a larger opera titled Il prigionier superbo. It premiered on August 28, 1733, and quickly became a popular standalone work. The music was characterized by a sense of freshness and grace. This style offered a lighter alternative to the heavy, serious operas of the time.

In 1752, the performance of La serva padrona in Paris sparked a major musical conflict. This event was known as the Querelle des Bouffons, or the "quarrel of the comic actors." The debate lasted for two years and divided the musical community in Paris. Supporters of traditional French opera defended the works of Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau. On the other side, supporters of the new Italian comic opera used Pergolesi as their model. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau even argued that Pergolesi's music proved Italian opera was superior to French lyric tragedy.

Pergolesi also produced profound sacred music for religious settings. His most famous sacred composition is the Stabat Mater, written around 1735 or 1736. This work was commissioned by the Confraternita dei Cavalieri di San Luigi di Palazzo for Good Friday meditations. It is scored for soprano and alto voices, a string orchestra, and basso continuo. The piece replaced an older setting by Alessandro Scarlatti from 1724. Pergolesi's version demonstrated mastery of the Italian baroque durezze e ligature style. This style uses many suspensions over a fast, conjunct bassline.

The Stabat Mater became an incredible commercial success in the 18th century. It was the most frequently printed musical work of that entire century. Its influence reached even the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach reorchestrated and adapted the work for his own cantata, BWV 1083. Beyond the church, Pergolesi's music has appeared in many modern movies. You can hear his work in films such as Amadeus, Farinelli, and The Mirror.

Pergolesi was born in Jesi, Italy, in 1710. His family ancestors were from the nearby town of Pergola. This origin is why he was often called "Pergolesi," a demonym for people from that area. He studied under Francesco Santi in Jesi before moving to Naples in 1725. In Naples, he studied with masters like Gaetano Greco and Francesco Feo. He worked for aristocratic patrons, including Prince Ferdinando Colonna and Duke Domenico Marzio Carafa. Sadly, he died of tuberculosis in Pozzuoli at the age of 26.

Because of his immense fame, Pergolesi's name was often used to sell music. This led to a massive problem with misattributed works. During the 18th and 19th centuries, many scores were published under his name for profit. An informal catalog once listed over five hundred compositions attributed to him. Modern critics have worked hard to correct these errors. They now recognize only about thirty works as true Pergolesi compositions. Some scholars even suggest that only twenty-eight of those are definitely his. This uncertainty even affects famous works like the Magnificat in D major, which was actually by his teacher, Francesco Durante.
