Marcello Mastroianni was a legendary Italian actor of the 20th century. He is widely regarded as one of Italy's most iconic male performers. His career was remarkably long and productive, spanning 147 films between 1939 and 1996. Mastroianni was famous for his ability to master both dramatic and comedic roles. This versatility allowed him to become a global symbol of Italian art and culture.

His journey into acting began at a very young age. He made his film debut in 1939 as an uncredited extra in the film Marionette. He was only 14 years old at the time. For many years, he appeared in only minor or intermittent roles. It was not until the 1950s that he achieved a major commercial and critical breakthrough. This shift occurred with the caper comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street in 1959. This film helped launch him toward international stardom.

Mastroianni's fame grew through intense collaborations with world-class directors. He worked closely with the director Federico Fellini on several landmark films. In La Dolce Vita (1960), he played a disillusioned tabloid columnist exploring Rome's high society.

He later played a creatively-stifled filmmaker in the 1963 film 8½. He also formed a famous on-screen partnership with actress Sophia Loren. The two actors co-starred in eleven different films between 1954 and 1994. Despite his massive international success, Mastroianni largely avoided Hollywood. He chose to remain a quintessentially Italian thespian for most of his career.

The actor's life was shaped by his early years in Italy. He was born in Fontana Liri, a small village in the Apennines. His parents were Ida and Ottone Mastroianni, and his father ran a carpentry shop. Marcello grew up in the cities of Turin and Rome. His life was also affected by the events of World War II. During the war, he was interned in a loosely guarded German prison camp. He eventually escaped the camp and found safety by hiding in Venice.

Mastroianni achieved unprecedented success in the global film awards circuit. He was the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for a non-English language performance. He earned three such nominations for the films Divorce Italian Style (1961), A Special Day (1977), and Dark Eyes (1987). He was also one of only three actors to win the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival twice. The other two actors to achieve this feat were Jack Lemmon and Dean Stockwell. Mastroianni won his two Cannes awards for The Pizza Triangle in 1970 and Dark Eyes in 1987.

His professional excellence earned him significant national recognition. In 1994, he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. This is the highest-ranking knighthood in the country.

His family also played a role in his professional life. His brother, Ruggero Mastroianni, was a film editor who worked on several of Marcello's films. His daughter, Chiara Mastroianni, also became an actress and starred alongside him in the 1996 film Three Lives and Only One Death.

Mastroianni passed away from pancreatic cancer on December 19, 1996, at the age of 72. His death was marked by significant tributes in Italy. In Rome, the famous Trevi Fountain was symbolically turned off and draped in black. This was a tribute to his iconic role in La Dolce Vita. A funeral was held at the Church of St. Sulpice in Paris. Later, a second ceremony took place at the Rome city hall. He was finally interred in his family vault in the Verano Cemetery. His legacy continues to influence the world of cinema today.
