Domenico Scarlatti was a famous Italian composer from the Baroque period.

He was born in Naples in 1685. This was the same year as other great musicians like Bach and Handel. Scarlatti was the sixth child in a large family of ten. His father, Alessandro Scarlatti, was also a well-known composer and teacher. Domenico studied music under his father at a young age. He later worked in many important places, such as the Chapel Royal of Naples.

Scarlatti is most famous for his 555 keyboard sonatas. A sonata is a piece of music written for a single instrument. Most of his sonatas were written for the harpsichord or early pianos. These short pieces can sound many different ways. Some are light and almost funny, like a happy dance. Others are very serious or sound like songs from the street. He even used a special trick called a "crux." This is a turning point in the middle of a piece.

His life took him on a long journey across Europe. In 1719, he moved to Lisbon to work in Portugal. He was the musical director for King John V. Later, he moved to Spain to teach Princess Maria Barbara. She eventually became the Queen of Spain. Scarlatti lived in Spain for the last 25 years of his life. During this time, his music began to change in a special way. He started using sounds from Spanish and Portuguese folk music.

Scarlatti's music has many unique details that make it stand out. He often used notes that repeat to sound like a Spanish guitar. He also used "dissonance," which means notes that sound a bit clashing or unexpected. He published a famous collection called Essercizi in 1738. This book contained 30 of his keyboard sonatas. Many people in Europe loved these pieces right away. Even in England, musicians formed a group to celebrate his talent.

Many great musicians have admired Scarlatti throughout history. Famous composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms all loved his work. Today, pianists all over the world still play his sonatas. Even a small planet in space, named 6480 Scarlatti, honors him. He died in Madrid at the age of 71. His music connects the old Baroque style to the newer Classical style. It remains a wonderful part of musical history.
