A baritone is a special kind of male singing voice. It sits right in the middle between the deep bass and the high tenor. Because it is in the middle, it is the most common male voice.

The name comes from a Greek word that means "low sounding." Different types of baritones exist for different kinds of music. You might hear a light lyric baritone or a deep bass-baritone. Some singers even have special names like the baryton-Martin. These voices help tell stories through many different sounds.

Singers use their voices to reach specific musical notes. In choral music, composers often write for them from F2 to F4. This means the second F below middle C to the F above middle C. In opera, the range is often a bit different. It usually goes from G2 to G4.

This range can stretch even higher or lower depending on the singer. Composers use these notes to make the voice sound brilliant. They often focus on the top fifth of the voice to create a bright tone.

History shows how the baritone voice has changed over time. The term first appeared in the late 15th century as "baritonans." At that time, it was used in French sacred music. In the 17th century, Italian music used the term for the average male choral voice. For a long time, baritones were grouped together with bass singers. It was not until the 19th century that they became their own category. This happened as the bel canto style of singing became popular in Italy.

Many famous composers wrote beautiful music for baritones. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote great roles like Papageno in *The Magic Flute*.

Later, Giuseppe Verdi wrote many famous parts for this voice. He wrote roles in operas like *Rigoletto* and *La traviata*. Other composers like Rossini and Donizetti also wrote for them. Some singers became huge stars during this time. Mattia Battistini was even called the "King of Baritones."

Baritones play many different characters in stories. In older operas, bass singers often played kings or high priests. Baritones had more variety in the roles they played. They could be trusted companions or even romantic leads. However, they were also often cast as the villains.

This variety makes the baritone voice very important in theater. From comic roles to serious heroes, they bring many emotions to the stage.
