A baritone is a type of male singing voice.

It sits between the deep bass and the high tenor. This is the most common voice for men. The name comes from a Greek word. It means "low sounding."

In the past, these singers played many roles. In old operas, basses often played kings. Baritones had more choices. They could play trusted friends or romantic leads. Often, they played the villains.

Many great composers wrote music for this voice. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote famous parts for them. He wrote roles like Papageno in *The Magic Flute*. In the 1800s, composers like Giuseppe Verdi made the voice sound more brilliant. They used the higher notes more often.

There are different kinds of baritones. A lyric baritone has a lighter sound. A bass-baritone is deeper and more powerful. Some singers were huge stars. Mattia Battistini was known as the "King of Baritones."

You can still hear beautiful music from this voice today.
