This voice sits between the high soprano and the low contralto. Mezzo voices often sound warmer and darker than soprano voices. They can sing a wide range of notes.

Some can sing as low as an F below middle C. Others can sing as high as a high C.

There are three main kinds of mezzo-sopranos. The first is the coloratura mezzo-soprano. These singers have a warm low sound. They can also sing very fast, tricky notes. The second kind is the lyric mezzo-soprano. Their voices sound very smooth and sensitive. The third kind is the dramatic mezzo-soprano. These voices are broad and powerful. They can sing loudly over a big orchestra and a large chorus.

Mezzo-sopranos play many roles in operas. They often play wise women, nurses, or witches. Sometimes they play villains. They even play "trouser roles." This means a woman plays a male character, like Cherubino in Mozart's opera. Some famous roles include Carmen and Rosina. These singers bring great skill to the stage.
