Singers use these notes to sing. Some singers use a microphone. This lets them use more notes. Opera singers do not use microphones. They must sing loud enough to be heard over an orchestra.

People use vocal range to name voice types. A voice type is a special way to group singers. Teachers look at many things to do this. They look at vocal timbre, which is the sound of the voice. They also look at tessitura. This is where the voice feels most comfortable.

Women usually have three main groups. Sopranos have high voices. Mezzo-sopranos are in the middle. Contraltos have low voices. Men have four main groups. Tenors have high voices. Baritones are in the middle. Basses have low voices. Some men sing very high using falsetto. These men are called countertenors. Children are often called trebles.
